The Human Effectiveness Directorate (HED), BioSciences and Protection Division of Wright-Patterson AFB conducts scientific research to protect warfighters from a broad spectrum of chemical, biological, and physical stressors. In addition, the group exploits biological systems to provide radically new military capabilities that improve warfighter performance and combat effectiveness. HED seeks to assure victory by extending and enhancing the AF capabilities to protect personnel. HED provides, in a timely and responsive manner, a broad range of evolutionary and revolutionary technologies to meet the critical needs of the warfighter for full dimensional protection, survivability, and performance enhancement. The division has five key research and technology areas: Aircrew Performance & Protection Branch (HEPG), Applied Biotechnology Branch (HEPB), Biomechanics Branch (HEPA), Counterproliferation Branch (HEPC), and the Fatigue Countermeasures Branch (HEPF).
