Statement from the Ohio Life Sciences Association on House Passage of H.R. 7148 and MCED Screening Coverage

The Ohio Life Sciences Association applauds the U.S. House for advancing H.R. 7148, including the Nancy Gardner Sewell Medicare Multi-Cancer Early Detection Screening Coverage Act. The legislation expands access to FDA-approved early cancer detection tests, improving patient outcomes while strengthening Ohio’s life sciences economy.

Screening Coverage Act

COLUMBUS, OH — The Ohio Life Sciences Association applauds the U.S. House of Representatives for advancing H.R. 7148, a House spending package that includes the Nancy Gardner Sewell Medicare Multi-Cancer Early Detection Screening Coverage Act—a major milestone for patients, families, clinicians, and innovators working to detect cancer earlier and save lives.

The Multi-Cancer Early Detection Screening Coverage Act would help ensure that eligible Medicare beneficiaries can access FDA-approved multi-cancer early detection tests, supporting earlier diagnosis and improving outcomes—especially for cancers that are difficult to detect through today’s standard screening methods.

In addition to its patient impact, this legislation has meaningful implications for Ohio’s economy. Expanding access to cutting-edge early detection can strengthen Ohio’s leadership in life sciences innovation, accelerate clinical adoption, and support continued growth in high-wage jobs across research, diagnostics, biopharma, health systems, and advanced manufacturing—while helping reduce long-term healthcare costs for families and employers.

This progress would not be possible without the diligent advocacy of patient, medical, and public health organizations across Ohio and the nation. Ohio Life Sciences is proud to stand alongside so many partners whose persistence helped move this effort forward.

The U.S. Senate is expected to consider the package next week, and Ohio Life Sciences urges Senators Jon Husted and Bernie Moreno to support its passage and keep momentum moving. This legislation has generated strong bipartisan support from leaders in both chambers.

Ohio Life Sciences also recognizes Congressman Max Miller for his support and leadership as a co-sponsor of this bill, along with Representatives Landsman, Beatty, Rulli, Kaptur, Brown, Balderson, Sykes, Carey, Joyce, who signed on as sponsors. These members are advancing policies that strengthen early detection and accelerate lifesaving innovation.

“The Nancy Gardner Sewell Medicare Multi-Cancer Early Detection Screening Coverage Act—is an incredible milestone for patients and a powerful example of what sustained advocacy can accomplish,” said Eddie Pauline, President and CEO of the Ohio Life Sciences Association. “This progress reflects years of leadership from Ohio patient and medical organizations, and I also want to thank our association members—your voices made a difference.”

Pauline continued: “We’re grateful for Congressman Max Miller’s support, and now we need the U.S. Senate to finish the job. We encourage Senators Husted and Moreno to be supportive—the package is coming their way next week. This is a chance to improve lives and strengthen Ohio’s economy by advancing innovation and adoption of early detection technologies that can help more people get the right care sooner.”
