COLUMBUS, Ohio — July 31, 2026 — The National Security Commission on Emerging Biotechnology (NSCEB) visited Ohio this week as part of its national “Biotech Across America” District Spotlight series, spending two days engaging with the companies, institutions, and workforce programs driving the state’s life sciences ecosystem across Cleveland and Columbus.
On July 30, the Commission began its visit in Cleveland, meeting with leaders from Cleveland Clinic, J.P. Morgan, Case Western Reserve University, and Asclepii. The day included a “State of MedTech” breakfast, a Cutting-Edge Biotechnology Showcase featuring regional startups and university research, and a session hosted by Asclepii and Nottingham Spirk, on Advanced Biotech Manufacturing, highlighting Cleveland’s growing role in the sector.
The NSCEB’s visit to Ohio underscores the region’s growing global leadership in emerging biotechnology. This momentum reflects decades of work by world-class institutions such as Cleveland Clinic and Case Western Reserve University, whose research, infrastructure, and talent have created the foundation for companies like Asclepii to reimagine the future of healthcare and biotechnology. On July 31, the Commission continued its tour along the Ohio Discovery Corridor, traveling to Columbus and visiting three sites across Central Ohio: Battelle, Andelyn Biosciences headquarters, and the Ohio Life Science Training Center in New Albany. Throughout the day, the Commission heard directly from regional stakeholders on the ecosystem’s successes, current challenges, and how federal policy can better support continued growth, discussions that will feed into the Commission’s ongoing work and its recent report to Congress.
The day began at Battelle with welcome remarks and a moderated panel on Ohio’s biotech and innovation assets, followed by a series of technical lightning talks spanning retrobiosynthesis, energetics, biosecurity, supply chain vulnerabilities, and national labs and biotech centers.

In the afternoon, the Commission traveled to Andelyn Biosciences headquarters for a roundtable and tour focused on biomanufacturing, supply chain, and scale-up — examining Central Ohio’s contribution to domestic biotech manufacturing and the constraints and opportunities shaping the industry’s future.
