At OLS we are advocates who try to pave a smoother path for the life sciences in Ohio, connectors, helping entrepreneurs, scientists, and engineers bring their visions to life. And we are resources, bringing good, sound information to the decision-makers across our state to help them navigate difficult choices.

Ohio’s economic strength is in its people, its innovation, and our collaboration. That is especially true in the Toledo area, as I learned on a recent visit to the region.

We’ve been tallying the 2021 Ohio bioscience investment figures and thinking about where our industry is now, where we’d like it to go in the future, and most importantly, how we at OLS can help us all get there.

Recently, I moderated a panel discussion about cell and gene therapy at the Columbus Metropolitan Club. The panelists’ insights were as profound as you might imagine, but one comment in particular has stayed with me since the event: “The opportunity is so vast. The sky’s the limit.”

Since the news broke in late January that Intel had chosen Ohio for the site of what may grow to become the world’s largest semiconductor manufacturing facility, the state and nation have been buzzing about what this means for Ohio, jobs, R&D, and our economy.

A few weeks ago, I had an opportunity that made me pause to reflect on the human characteristics that drive scientific achievement: I volunteered at my kids’ elementary-school science fair in Worthington. I was inspired by the volume of projects that focused on human health.
