Synapse Biomedical, Inc. (SBI) is commercializing the NeuRx Diaphragm Pacing System (DPS), designed to produce electrical stimulation for the treatment of chronic respiratory insufficiency. Applications of this technology are found in critical need patients with spinal cord injuries, muscular dystrophies (such as ALS) and in the respiratory short-term intensive care setting. The DPS provides electrical stimulation to muscle and nerves that run through the diaphragm by way of electrodes that can be implanted for long term care patients.
